On Saturday, Gary & Steve joined us. We headed to the park and got ready. Only eight of us could clean so John and Nicole stayed back and toured the area. After filling out paperwork, we followed our leader, Tom Bemis.

Tom works in Cave Resources and coordinates trail/cave restoration projects here in Carlsbad Caverns. Our area was just slightly out of site of the main trail (area 24) called ??? You have to skirt a very clear cave lake.

The problem here is red clay mud was used to cover the electric lines and it get's tracked everywhere! This floor should be white and grey.. notice the red clay has been saturated into the area. Our project 1 of 2 - eliminate traces of the red clay from the trail and formations in the area.

No Anne... it's not that high... just on the floor and hands level. Lil very quickly claims "The Rock" as her personal part of the project...Anne helps out... A quote I heard, "This should give us lots of immediate satisfaction seeing the quick results!"

Six hours later, Anne & Lil finished their rock and surrounding area! Roy continued on an area previously worked on by another grotto, cleaning down to the trail... then he joined steve and they worked on the dead end backward to the mushroom squeeze area (near Lil & Anne)

NO STEVE! Don't brush with that!!! What happens when you use a "Cave Toothbrush" for brushing rather than scrubbing rock & formations! The tools of a cave restoration crew - water buckets, brushes, toothbrushes, water sprayers, and sponges to absorb the water.
